High expectations
All that we do at Iluka Public School is done with a high expectation for success. We are a great school that is on a journey to being a school that is trying to excel in all areas. Each teacher, support and staff member who works at our school shares a sense of high expectations for themselves, their students and each other. The staff at Iluka Public School work as a team to ensure that we provide the best possible educational outcomes for your children irrespective of class structure, enrollment data or the multitude of other factors that shape and influence a school. I look forward to continuing to work with all levels of the community to ensure that our wonderful school continues to thrive throughout 2021 and beyond.
Art of leadership
This week I am attending a three day leadership course in Coffs Harbour. This was a course I tried to attend last year but due to COVID was unable to attend. It will certainly help me become a better Principal for the students, staff and community. Thank you to Mrs Cunningham who has been responsible for the smooth running of the school.
Enrolments for 2022 now being taken
The school is currently accepting enrolment applications for 2022 enrolment. If you, a neighbour or even a friend are interested in learning more about the school please don't hesitate to contact the school to arrange an appointment to discuss enrolment. We are also eager to receive sibling enrolments as soon as possible as this helps us begin to plan for school structures. I look forward to welcoming prospective members of the community to our school tours and working with our 2022 kindergarten families in supporting the transition to school programs later this year.
Tour dates:
- 15 June at 9.30am
- 17 June at 2pm
- 21 June at 9.30am
- 24 June at 2pm
Please contact the front office for more information.
Congratulations
Jade and Emma played five games of Basketball for the North Coast Team in the PSSA Competition. The games were played in Sydney.
The team played very well together. North Coast finished in eighth position. Jade and Emma had a great time playing and making new friends! Well done on a fantastic tournament. Here is a quick report from the girls:
Jade and Emma: We were selected to represent North Coast in Basketball. The team was selected from schools from Tweed Heads to Port Macquarie. We arrived in Sydney on Monday afternoon and went straight to training. It was an hour-long training session, it was good and we got to meet our teammates. It was cold in the stadium when we weren't playing. We got team photos taken on Wednesday morning. We played 7 games. We won 3 and lost 4 and we came 8th out of 14 teams. The Sydney teams and private schools were the hardest to play. It was fun and we got to create team chants. While we were down there we had a team dinner one night and were lucky enough to play aqua golf on another night.

A reminder that the Stage 3 excursion payments are now being accepted. Balance of payment ($550) is due Friday, Friday 16 July. (Payment is due by this date as venues require payments in advance.) On Monday a detailed permission note, agenda and a packing list was given out to all Stage 3 students. Could the medical and permission notes be returned by Friday 18 June 2021.
Assembly sign-in
Please remember that parents and carers attending our Assembly Friday June 18 2021 must sign-in using both the QR code and the visitor sheet. Office staff will need to confirm that you have signed in successfully and you will then be given a coloured sticker to help us keep track of the number of visitors attending the Assembly. I thank you in advance for your support and patience.
Toys and sports equiptment
Just a reminder – Toys and Sports equipment are not to be brought to school as the risk of these being lost, being used at the wrong times or stolen is unavoidable. There are many structured play options available to all students on a daily basis during the lunch time break. Please speak with your children about leaving them at home.
Student safety
The school traffic on both Charles and Spenser Streets are busy at the end of the school day. I would appreciate all parents being vigilant around all students safety whether you are in your car or walking with your child. Please be aware that there is an increased chance of young children emerging between cars during these busy pick up times for our school. Their size and unpredictable behaviour makes it more difficult for drivers to see them.
Parking restrictions apply over the footpath on Spenser Street to improve the safety of pedestrians and minimise traffic congestion.
P&C meeting
The next P&C meeting for Term 2 is on Wednesday 23 June, 3.15 pm - 4.30pm in the staffroom.
School attendance and absences
All children of compulsory school age who are enrolled at school are expected to attend every day the school is open for their instruction. If your child is away it is required that parents or carers provide an explanation for absences by means such as a telephone call, written note or email to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. Some justified reasons for absence include illness, injury, and specialist appointments.
Attendance rates less than 90% flag concerns for student learning, connection to classmates and lost time and productivity. A lower than 90% attendance rate is the equivalent of an employee missing one full day of work each fortnight which most employers would no doubt find unacceptable. It is important that parents work in partnership with the school to plan and implement strategies to support regular attendance at school, including communicating with the school if you are aware of issues impacting on your child.
Have a great week. Phil

Organisation … Semester One Reports
Kindergarten and Year One students will be taking home their Semester One reports this Friday. Please look for an envelope in your child’s communication folder.
Curriculum … Spelling
Year One-Now that our Spelling Bee competition for 2021 has drawn to a close, our focus returns to our class spelling program. A new approach, ‘One Word A Day’, to spelling is being implemented for the remainder of the year. Students have been tested on the core list spelling words for Year One and some students participating in the extension spelling group have been tested on the core list spelling words for Year Two. The spelling procedure is that all students practice each day one of the words that they have spelt incorrectly in their spelling test. Each night the students take home to practice the word that they have been learning in class. The next day a test is given to determine whether a new word is issued or extra practice of the same word is required.
Assembly Awards
Congratulations to the following students who received Merit Certificates at our Whole School Assembly on Friday: Kindergarten - Jake, Charlie and Year One - Cody, Aryk, Ilah and Jy.
