Principal report

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are still operating under Level 3 Covid settings, which prevents schools from attending excursions and camps. Stage 3 teachers and myself are working hard to make safe and alternate arrangements as we approach the halfway mark of the term.

However, on the bright side slowly the DoE (Department of Education), are now allowing an easing of restrictions. These include;

Water bubblers can now be turned back on. Ours have been cleaned, pipes rinsed through and are operating again.

The Learn to Swim classes can once again resume. Students in Years 2, 3 and 4 have taken home a permission note with details of the program.

Professional learning

On Tuesday afternoon all staff will attend a 90 minute Professional Learning session called, Trauma Informed Practice training. This was the first session of four in the program. The Professional Learning will take place each Tuesday over November. The goal of the training is to;

  • Realise the widespread impact of trauma and understand paths for recovery;
  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of trauma in students and families,
  • Integrate knowledge about trauma into our policies, procedures, and practices at Iluka PS; and
  • Actively avoid re-traumatisation.

We thank our coordinator of the program, Sue Rees and to all staff (including our dedicated SLSO’s) for giving up family time.

Kindergarten orientation 2022

Our Kindergarten Class of 2022 arrived last Wednesday for the first of their three transition days. The enthusiastic children met their new teacher Mrs Howard and learnt about how Kindergarten works at Iluka Public School. The children spent time in the library, some time in the playgrounds and became more familiar with our beautiful surroundings. The children also met next year’s Year 6 class who will help teachers guide them all the way through their transition to Kindergarten at IPS in 2022.  We look forward to meeting you all again on Wednesday 10 November 2021.

Tell them from me

The Tell Them From Me surveys provide schools with student, teacher and parent perspectives about the engagement and wellbeing of their students. This information is valuable to schools and can be used to identify strengths and successes, as well as areas to target for improvement.

To have your say please follow the link  http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/tr44v

2022 Planning

As previously requested, we would appreciate knowing as soon as possible if your child will not be returning to IPS in 2022. Likewise, if you know of any families intending to enrol for Kindergarten next year, please encourage them to do so as soon as possible.

External validation

Once in a five-year cycle every school in NSW undergoes an External Validation by an independent panel, of the evidence of their school’s self-assessment of progress. Throughout 2021 our whole school team at Iluka Public School, teachers and Principal supported by our admin team, carried out a rigorous process of self-assessment, involving selection and analysis of artefacts to form high level, robust evidence sets which support school practice.

The evidence is annotated to describe the what, when, how and why, enabling us to reach on-balance judgements for each element of the School Excellence Framework. The External Validation process provides an assurance to the school and system that the progress being made aligns with the expectations articulated in the School Excellence Framework (SEF).

An independent panel from Sydney determined whether the evidence presented supported the school’s assessment. The panel meeting provided an opportunity for the IPS School Leadership team (Mrs Cunningham, Mr Jones and myself) to share their evidence with the panel and engage in meaningful discussions about progress and achievements using the School Excellence Framework (SEF).

Our panel meeting was held last Wednesday 27 October. Some of the comments from the panel members were focussed on our:

  • Student voice; The stories, ideas, creativity news and opinions for students, by students, shines through.
  • The learning culture that you’ve built is obvious and we can see how well you all work together.

Semester 2 student reports

In line with advice from the Department of Education our school report format for Semester 2 has been modified to reflect the impact of Learning from Home and at school during the COVID-19 period in Term 3. Student reports have been adjusted to reflect English and Mathematics. Students' social development and commitment to learning and a general comment will also be included.

Parent alert 1

You may not be aware, but Squid Games is a series streaming on Netflix whereby contestants are systematically killed through a series of well-known children's games like 'Red Light, Green Light' and 'Marbles'. It is rated MA15+ for mature adults. We also know that some of our students are being exposed to it through other platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Roblox. Shows such as this are not suitable for primary students and if you haven't already, we encourage you to change your Netflix settings and closely monitor your children's online activity.

Parent alert 2

Similarly does your child use TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat?

Both the physical age of your child and their level of maturity and resilience can affect their ability to have positive experiences on social media. Each social media site and app has its own criteria for minimum age requirements. Most require users to be at least 13 years of age before they can register. That means, for most of our Iluka students, they should not be using any form of social media. To help make your child safer and happier at school your support in this matter would be appreciated.

We have recently been in touch with the eSafety Commissioner seeking guidance on how we can further assist our parents with online safety. The Commissioner has offered a series of free webinars for parents to participate in for Digital Technologies and Mental Health + Online Gaming. Follow the link https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/webinars to register.

Have a good week, Phil.

Thank you to Mr Kevin Hogan, MP for providing Iluka Public School with a new Torres Strait Island flag for our daily flag pole display. We greatly appreciate Mr Hogan's continued support of our school.

If you happen to be out and about, you may like to check out the new art display by Iluka PS in the front window of the Wellspring Opshop. Again we thank Mrs Howard for her time in organising this display and Jo at the opshop for her continued support of the school.

Iluka Public School would like to show appreciation to Iluka Rideshare for their generous donation of $50.00 as result of their Halloween Best Dressed junior competition.

Class K/1 news

Spelling - This week is our final week for revision of our Year One core list spelling words. The Year One students have taken home today a spelling sheet showing the words that have already been learnt and a list of words that require a little bit of extra practice at home, before our final assessment next week.

Tennis - Mr Alan Jurd will recommence tennis lessons this Thursday, for those students that attend this extra curricular program.

Class 2/3 news

Hello everyone,

Well here we are in November already. We have such a beautiful and mild Spring. I hope that all is going well in your homes.

Maths - Both classes last week were involved in our diagnostic assessment. During this time the students have to recall prior learnt knowledge to reproduce in test format. Normally in class time we assist students with work they are having difficulties with but during assessment time we want to see what the children are capable of doing themselves.

English - Has involved reading a joint text about storms and their severity. In writing we wrote about all the beneficial things that can be done when a storm is approaching. A poster with pictures is also being completed.

Swimming - Intensive swimming begins next week. Please find all information in the note that went home. Send back the permission slip as soon as possible, please.

Have a wonderful week, Di

Class 4 news

Hello,

Swimming - Yesterday students took home a permission note regarding swim school. This program will commence next Tuesday. Please return the note and bus transportation money by next Monday.

Mrs Gardner’s Junk - Teachers accumulate a lot of stuff and it is this time of year I like to have a huge clean out. Many of the students have creative minds and have been collecting bits and pieces from my junk pile. As the stuff was destined for the bin/recycling anyway, I will not be offended if you throw it out.

Book Parade - On Thursday students will be given the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character. A parade will be held in the morning where students show off their costumes to other classes. All students who dress up will be eligible to go in the draw for a $15 Book Fair voucher.

Have a lovely week.

- Kristy

Class 5 news

Hello everyone

Homework - Sheets were sent home today and need to be completed and returned to class on Friday.

Assessments - We have started our assessments for reporting. This is our final week of Poetry. Over the next few weeks the emphasis will be on procedures and explanations.

Recycled materials - This week the class will be building sustainable houses out of recycled items. I am encouraging students to bring in any recycled items such as containers or boxes that you may have at home. Each group will be in need of a few items each to assist in their builds.

Book Parade - This Thursday students will be given the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character. A parade will be held in the morning. All students who dress up will be eligible to go in the draw for a $15 Book Fair voucher.

Class 6 news

Hi everyone. Thursday is the Book Parade. We are aiming for 100% dress-up for our class. Please come to school in your costume or get ready as soon as you arrive. Bring your school clothes too, thank you.

Homework is going well for 60% of students. Is your child doing their homework? Do you check your child’s homework?  There will be homework in High School.

MHS Transition was a great day and a real eye-opener. Thank you to MHS for their organisation.

The students are working very well in class. They are a bit excitable at lunchtime. Plenty of sleep every night, good food and a water bottle are obvious essentials.

Educators (Teachers and Parents/Carers) statewide are concerned about some children’s over-use/mis-use of messaging, social media and unfiltered internet access, especially since lockdown. We are even seeing a rise in disruptions at schools caused by issues arising from students (and parents) misuse of messaging and social media platforms outside of school. Please monitor your child’s use of these platforms. Better yet - delete them from their devices - a break will be good for them.

For further information and free webinars on how parents and carers can help support their children’s online behaviours, follow the link to the Australian Government's e-Safety Commissioner's website. This site is an outstanding resource. Registrations are now open for the next round of free webinars. https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/webinars

Have a good week, Chris.

Library/technology

Book fair

The final Scholastic Book Fair for the year has arrived and will be here for 2 weeks. Students will be able to make purchases during most lunchtimes and in the mornings before school. Parents who are double vaccinated will be able to attend the fair Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons between 3:00 - 3:30 pm, with QR code check-in at the office and hand sanitising essential. EFTpos and cash payments will be accepted.

Book parade

This Thursday, November 4, students from all classes will be given the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character for the day. A parade will be held in the morning where students show off their costumes to other classes. Due to current Level 3 restrictions, this will be a student only event. All students that make an effort to dress up will be eligible to go in the draw for a $15 Book Fair voucher. There will be one person drawn from each class to win a voucher.

Book club

Issue #7 has been ordered and I am hoping all orders should arrive at the school this week. If you have ordered something from Book Club and it is meant to be a surprise for your child please let me know on 6646 6149 so I can leave it up at the office for your collection, instead of handing it out to your child.

Library remodel

For many years I have been working on slowly remodelling and rearranging the library to create a flexible, welcoming and exciting library space for students, teachers and parents. I have created specific tubs and categories for books so students can find it easy to locate and engage with particular genres, topics and authors in our library. To further this excitement, the library has some exciting new features coming before the end of the term, so keep an eye out for updates here on what’s to come.

I hope everyone has a great week. Matt.

Sports news

Extra curricular tennis with Mr Alan Jurd will recommence at lunchtime this Thursday 4 November.

Banking news

School Banking takes place on Tuesdays.

With the concluding of School Banking at the end of the term I have undertaken a stocktake of outstanding tokens with our current students. Therefore your child may come home with a Redeem a Reward slip. If you have your tokens at home, please hand them in when redeeming. However, if you are unable to locate them, just hand in the slip. Please note, rewards can be redeemed without a deposit. For any questions, contact me on 6646 6149 via the school office on a Tuesday.

Thank you, Leah.
