KINDERGARTEN, YEAR 1/2 EXCURSION
Today (Tuesday), we had nearly forty Kindergarten and Year 1/2 students attend an excursion to the local Peach Farm, Yamba Community Pool and return home via the Clarence River Ferries. All reports back to school indicate it’s been a fabulous day. I very much appreciate the teachers and our two OT practicum students who attended and supported our students during their adventure.
SPECIAL VISITORS
This week the school was visited by my Director, Educational Leadership, Mr John Baker and from Student Services, Maureen O’Brien. They were very impressed with our students, educational programs and the facilities we are providing our students. They enjoyed a walk around our playground equipment, the ovals and our classrooms and what they offer our school students. Both reported that we have an excellent school and our school community should be proud.
SCHOOL CAPTAINS 2021
Shortly, the Year 5 students will meet with me over the next couple of weeks to learn about the School Captain and Prefects election process. The school is represented on a daily basis by the elected school leaders, therefore it is important to ensure that the students selected for these roles are aware of a high standard and that they are appropriate role models for all students. Student Leader 2021 speeches will be held using ZOOM, as school assemblies are limited to 15 minutes. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions families are not permitted to attend the speeches this year. Further information on the speech process will be released closer to the date.
Here are my thoughts on what I believe makes a great leader of our school:
- Shows the ability to make decisions for themselves (without peer pressure).
- Demonstrates exemplary behaviour and always follows the school expectations.
- Has shown a willingness to be involved in extracurricular activities.
- Displays initiative and a positive attitude to learning.
- Works well as a team member.
- Possesses strong communication skills.
- Proudly wears a school uniform on a daily basis.
- Is always punctual and has limited absences from school.
- Works to their full potential in the classroom, completing set tasks to the best of their ability.
I wish all students in Year 5 the very best with their speeches.
ATTENDANCE
Parents are reminded that children need to come to school every day and if unable, all absences need to be explained. There are several ways that you can do this; note, telephone and email. If students are sick consistently or if they are absent from school for extended periods of time, a medical certificate is required to verify the absence. If your child is away for two days with no contact, the school will contact you in accordance with the Department of Education’s Attendance Policy.
YEAR 4
Tomorrow I will meet with our Year 4 students to discuss their roles in the 2020 Remembrance Day commemoration service. With Year 5 and 6 students on an excursion that day, Year 4 will be responsible for conducting a service at the Iluka Cenotaph. I am sure they will be both excited and nervous. I thank Mrs Gardner for supporting and guiding the students in preparation for the 11th of November. Clarence Valley Council has allowed a total of 100 people to attend. With past veterans and many senior citizens attending we are anticipating that parent participation will be minimal.
KINDERGARTEN 2021 ORIENTATION
Tomorrow (Wednesday) we welcome our 2021 Kindergarten friends into the Iluka Public School community for the third time this term. I’m sure you will join me in again welcoming our future new students and families into the school community.
This is also a reminder that children born between 1st August 2015 and 31st July 2016 are eligible to start Kindergarten in 2021. Enrolments are now open for new families and friends starting Kindergarten at Iluka Public School in 2021. It is important that any 2021 kindergarten students be in our area and to get enrolled in time to attend Orientation.
Have a safe and happy week, Phil.
CLASS K NEWS
‘Yarn Up’ Meeting - Last Tuesday, Mr Bradmore invited our class to an important meeting in his office. The students were presented with a large box. Upon opening the box, the students were delighted to see that it was filled with sandpit toys. In our last ‘yarn up’, the students volunteered to be responsible for organising the sandpit toys for lunch time play. They have already chosen topics they would like to talk about at our next ‘yarn up’. Our class leaders, Aryk and Ragnar, had the responsibility of speaking about our sandpit project at our morning assembly last Friday. The leadership qualities they are displaying is exceptional.
Physical Education - Our resident Occupational Therapists, Mary and Rita, will be working with the students during our weekly physical education lessons, to improve their fundamental movement skills.
Sport - The Kindergarten students have been participating in tennis drill activities with Mr Bradmore over the last three weeks, during our Friday sport time. This Friday, the students get to take home and keep the tennis racquet and ball they have been using in the lessons, which have been kindly donated to the students by the ANZ bank, who sponsor the Hotshot Tennis Program. Ask your child to tell and show you the activities they have been doing. It would be great if they could keep on practising these skills at home. Perhaps you could send us a photo to our school email address, iluka-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au. We would love to see them using their tennis racquet and ball!
Assembly Awards - Congratulations to the following students who received Merit Certificates at our school assembly last Friday: Willow, Amelia, Elsie, Cody, Ilah, Aryk and Ragnar.
Reminders:
Our Reading Eggs and Mathseeds Apps for home use will cease at the end of this year.

CLASS 1/2 NEWS
Hello everyone,
Class is coming along nicely, the students have been working hard to complete their daily tasks. Yesterday, Ms O’Neill had the class during my release, and she commented on their good behaviour and manners.
Library - A reminder that library this week will be on tomorrow (Wednesday), as the students were on their excursion during normal library time. This will just be an hour period, for students to return and borrow and have storytime.
Excursion - The Year 1/2 class has been eagerly awaiting today’s excursion. We are anticipating lots of fun, learning some about the workings of an orchard and a little about the farming side also. I have no doubts a good day will be had by all. Thank you for supporting your children with this exciting adventure.
Water Bottles - As the school bubblers are still out of action for drinking from (they can only be used for refilling bottles) I’d like to remind both students and parents/carers that it is so important that students bring a drink bottle each day to school. At times the weather is very warm and after a run around at Recess and Lunch, students need a good drink.
Have a lovely week

CLASS 3/4 NEWS
Occupational Therapists - We currently have Mary and Rita working with all students in Year 3/4. Students are receiving guidance with their handwriting and fine motor skills. Mary and Rita are also assisting students with developing social skills in small groups. We thank Mary and Rita for their programs and value their expertise in these areas.
Dance Fever Program - Students continue to enjoy their weekly hip hop dance lessons. Students are welcome to bring along a cap to wear for this activity as a part of their costume and persona. They will still require their sun safe hat for use in the playground.
Homework - Homework sheets are due on Friday and are marked in class. There are only a couple more weeks of homework remaining and it would be fantastic to see this through. Thank you to those students who consistently complete their homework every week and return it on Fridays.
Absences - Please send in a note or phone the office to explain your child’s absences from school. This is a requirement from the Department of Education and assists with keeping class rolls up to date.
NAIDOC Day - IPS will be celebrating NAIDOC Day this Friday at school with a range of fun activities. Students are invited to wear Aboriginal (red, yellow, orange, brown and black) or Torres Strait Island (blue and green) colours as part of our celebration.
Have a lovely week.

LIBRARY & TECHNOLOGY
BOOK FAIR
The final Book Fair for the year is up and running. This term’s Book Fair has a huge range of books. Normally the school gets 3 cartons delivered, however, this time they have delivered 4. This means there are a lot more books and a greater variety than previous fairs. Students are given the opportunity to purchase books during playtime at lunch and in the morning from 8:30 - 9:00. I will be keeping it open from 3:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon on Wednesday and Thursday this week for any parents who wish to make purchases via Eftpos.
NAIDOC DAY
This Friday will be NAIDOC Day, and in celebration of this special event I, along with Mrs Speirs, have created a collection of Aboriginal stories for students to choose from. There is a range of junior fiction, senior fiction and non-fiction books for students to read and borrow on their library days.
I hope everyone has a great week. Matt.
